How to Update Maps on the Alpine INE-W940 Navigation Unit

A few months ago, a gentleman stopped by my house to ask me if I could direct him to another home in our subdivision. Our subdivision has been on Google Maps for about two years or so, and I was curious why he didn’t just update the maps on his vehicle’s navigation unit. Then it kind of dawned on me that maybe he didn’t know how to do it. Then it occurred to me that people may not even know that they can update the maps on their in-dash navigation units! This article is specific to the Alpine INE-W940, but other non-internet connected navigation units should follow a similar process. So let’s get to it and learn how to update maps on the Alpine INE-W940 Navigation Unit.

Installing Naviextras Toolbox

The first thing you need to do is to open your favorite web browser and navigate to the Naviextras website. If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to register. You will need to download the Naviextras Toolbox program before continuing.

Make sure you’re signed in, then navigate to Click the Download button.

You can choose to save the file or just run the installer. I recommend just clicking the Run button.

Installing the program is just like installing any other Windows program, but if you need help, you can click here to view the slideshow.

Click Next.

Read the EULA if you want, then click I Agree.

You can change the default installation location, otherwise just click Install.

Click Finish to complete the installation. Leave the box checked so the program will start.

Using Naviextras Toolbox to Update Maps

When the Naviextras Toolbox program opens, you’ll see a seemingly useless screen.

In order for the program to update your maps, it has to know which navigation unit you have and what map information is loaded on it. The next step is going to involve inserting a USB stick into the Alpine INE-W940 and saving this information. Hopefully you have a USB extension cord installed in your glove box (or other custom location). Otherwise, you’ll have to pull the navigation unit out of the dash to access the USB port on the back of the unit.

I used a 4 GB USB stick formatted with the FAT32 file system. You’ll need at least 2 GB of storage space. The maps of the U.S.A. and Canada that I updated took up 1.7 GB of space.

Follow the slideshow below:

Tap Accept to acknowledge the warning.

Press the Menu button.

Tap the Settings button.

Scroll down to the bottom of the list.

Tap Update.

Press Go!

Now press Collect device information.

The navigation unit will now start saving the current map information to the USB stick.

Once it’s complete, you’ll see this screen. You can now remove the USB stick.

Almost there. Now take the USB stick back to the computer where you installed Naviextras Toolbox. The program should automatically recognize it. To get the updated maps, follow the next slideshow:

Naviextras Toolbox may redirect you to the Home tab to login. You don’t need to sign in. Click on the Device tab in the sidebar.

If there’s an update available, the Devices tab will instead show Updates. If you get a popup to backup your device, click Later (you’ll do this shortly).

Click Install to download the map information.

The program will ask if you want to do a backup first. You don’t have to, but it may be a good idea if something goes horribly wrong.

Give your backup a name and then click OK.

When the backup finishes, click OK.

The updated map information will automatically start downloading. This will take about 20-30 minutes depending on your internet speed.

When it finishes, click OK.

You can now eject your USB stick.

Update Maps on the Alpine INE-W940 Navigation Unit

Finally, all that’s left to do is to load the map information from the USB stick to the Alpine INE-W940. Follow the slideshow below to see how to do it (I’ve repeated the steps for accessing the unit’s menu, for convenience).

Slideshow- Tap or click to view

Tap Accept to acknowledge the warning.

Press the Menu button.

Tap the Settings button.

Scroll down to the bottom of the list.

Tap Update.

Press Go!

Now that you’ve updated the map information, you’ll need to load it onto the navigation unit. Select Copy updates to your device.

Tap Yes.

This process could take a while depending on the number of map changes. Be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes or so.

Once the process is finished you should see this screen. Tap OK and the navigation unit will reboot.

I’ve used the Alpine INE-W940 as my combination head unit/navigation unit in my vehicle for several years. I live in a rapidly expanding city in Tennessee, and well, there’s been a lot of construction and new roads built since my navigation unit was installed. Luckily, Alpine gives you lifetime updates on maps. There’s no need to purchase new maps, which typically run about $60 for a map package! It’s free and easy to update maps on the Alpine INE-W940.
