SmartThings is compatible with a variety of sensors that can be used to monitor different aspects of your home. This is actually a pretty good way to build out your own self-monitored home security system. Or maybe you want to compliment the security system you already have in place. Some people just want to know the status of things in their house for automation purposes. Whatever the reason, you’ll find some of the sensors I use and can personally vouch for below.
SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor
The SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor is a combination sensor that can act as contact sensor for doors and windows, a vibration sensor, an orientation/tilt sensor, and a temperature sensor.
Visonic MCT-340-E Contact Sensor
Visonic makes a cheaper alternative to the SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor if all you need is open/close status. Like the SmartThings sensor, it also reports temperature.
SmartThings Water Leak Sensor
The SmartThings Water Leak Sensor has 2 metal prongs on the bottom to quickly detect leaks. It can detect temperature too!
Xiaomi Smart Motion Sensor
The Xiaomi Smart Motion Sensor is a tiny and sensitive motion sensor. It’s a quality sensor at a cheap price.
Xiaomi Aqara Door/Window Sensor
The Xiaomi Aqara Door/Window Sensor is the cheapest on the market and works just as well as its higher-priced competitors.
